Karnatak   Science College   Dharwad

Campus

 

Karnatak Science College, Dharwad, has a huge campus, sprawling over 57 acres. of land, with eco-friendly atmosphere, free from all urban disturbances.  It is centrally located and is well connected by roads to the major parts of Dharwad city.  It is just about two kilometers away (by road) from the central Bus stand, Dharwad Railway station, as well as from the post graduate campus of Karnatak University.

 

Karnatak Science College campus houses several independent buildings, one for each subject group.  It has a Central library building, which is well stocked with books, including the latest standard books on different subjects required by under-graduate students. The central library has sufficient space and seating facility for 400 students who intend to refer books in the library itself.  In addition to the central library, the major departmental buildings house individual libraries, which cater to the needs of teacher and the taught, in the respective subjects.  These Departmental Libraries promote better Teacher – Student interaction, with seating facilities.  These libraries are as old as college and offer oldest possible editions of yester years reference materials.

 

The Karnatak Science College has a separate playground, independent, Athletic, Cricket, Hockey & Football grounds, which is unique feature of this college. An open air theatre and a well-equipped auditorium of international standard “SRUJANA” to promote performing art such as drama, classical music and folk art.  Karnatak Science College has four hostels, of that three are for Boys, and one for Girl students.  There are about thirty Staff Quarters.

 

In view of these features on the campus, the college is generally accepted as a “Model College” in this part of the country.

 

Trend-Setter    

 

Karnatak Science College is the “MOTHER INSTITUTION” which gave birth to the Karnatak University, Dharwad.  It has served as a springboard to establish Post Graduate Courses of Karnatak University in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Geology and Criminology.  These Post Graduate Courses were conducted in our Campus till 1970.  The post graduate (PG) courses were later shifted to the new campus, now being called “Karnatak University Campus”, where only P.G. Courses are taught.

 

Karnatak Science College has responded to recent developments in Science and Technology & the educational needs of the society by introducing undergraduate Courses in Electronics, Computer-Science, Computer Applications (B.C.A.), Biotechnology, Genetics, Microbiology, Industrial Fisheries and Information Science.  Significant Research work is being carried out in the Chemistry and Zoology Departments of our college, which have produced 9 Ph.Ds & 7 M.Phils and currently 8 students are pursuing research programme for Ph.D.  In view of these steps being taken up already and work being successfully performed, our college, serves as a “ Trend-setter “ in all educational fields in this part of our country.

 

Vision

 

      The Vision of Karnatak Science College, Dharwad, is to identify, select and nurture the potential intelligence in the personality of younger generation.  The interactions between the teacher and the taught, aims to develop more Scientific orientation, laboratory skills and theoretical ability of the students keeping in view of the quality and excellence and bridge the gap between practice and precept.  Karnatak Science College is planning to evolve strategies to inculcate in the minds of young students the sense of responsibility, adaptability and good leadership.  The college is taking steps to inspire and motivate the students to think globally and act locally, so as to generate proper healthy attitude towards life as a whole.

 

Good Governance

 

Karnatak Science College, being a constituent College of Karnatak University, Dharwad (K.U.D), enjoys good support from K.U.D. in all respects.  The faculty members are appointed strictly on the basis of University Act, and on merit cum roaster basis, so that the academic work is being done efficiently without outside interference.  The college is fortunate to have visionary Head, Principal.      Dr. S. G Mathad who is encouraging the members of the teaching staff to improve the academic standards of the college, so as to bring it on par with standard of national as well as international levels.

 

        Karnatak Science College has responsive and efficient administrative staff.  There is transparency in financial transactions.  There is a cordial relation among students, staff both teaching as well as administrative.

 

        Karnatak Science College, Dharwad has been selected vide letter no. ED 120 UNE 2002 dated   26-02-2003 by UGC as one of the autonomous colleges.  A copy of the letter mentioned above is enclosed herewith.

 

Students Faith in the System

 

Karnatak Science College is maintaining total transparency in academic as well as extra-curricular activities.

 
There is intimate continuous interaction between the teacher and the taught, so as to resolve different problems faced by the student.
 
Karnatak Science College has NCC and NSS units, right from the beginning   that help to inculcate the sense of National Integration, discipline & service, in the young minds of the students.
 

There are separate study circles in each department. These study circles conduct programmes like seminars, lectures, by prominent Resource persons in the respective fields, with the intention of enriching the knowledge of the students.

Healthy Practices

 

The college has a responding system, which caters the needs of the students headed by Student Welfare Officer who is also a faculty member.

 

Periodic discussions are arranged under the leadership of the Principal, wherein the Teacher, the Taught and the Parents are brought under one roof periodically. Different problems faced by the students are discussed with their Parents.

 

There is a Career Guidance Forum, which enables the student to be aware of the recent opportunities available and to prepare for taking up the challenges in the competitive world.

 

Seminars and tutorials are conducted by the different departments, to address the needs of the students and to develop their ability and confidence to over come the stage fear which helps the better projection of their ideas and the problems.

 

The college responds to the creative outlook of the students by highlighting their achievements through electronic and news media. The encouragement is in the form of awarding fellowships, prizes and certificates for their achievements in academic, sports, cultural and other talents.

 

For students belonging to weaker sections of the society like scheduled castes and scheduled tribes as well as economically backward students, a fee concession is given, and hostel facility is also provided. This facility enables the college to attract genuinely deserving students from weaker sections of the society, living in remote rural areas of Karnataka State.  In addition to this, the college in collaboration with NGO association like Vidya Poshak identifies genuine meritorious but economically weaker students and provide them funds to the tune of entire fees till the completion of the course such as Engineering, Medicine and other courses of their choice.

 

Strategy

 

Karnatak Science College has formulated HRD programme for faculty and administrative staff. Discussions are held in a cordial atmosphere to optimize the performance of the staff. In addition, a sense of belonging is created to shoulder the responsibilities earnestly and efficiently by this programme.

 

Karnatak Science College has plans to conduct programmes in collaboration with IT (Information Technology) industry to update the knowledge of faculty and administrative staff in the fields of education, computerization and office automation.

 

College is planning to organize shortly a group comprising Academicians, Scientists, Industrialists, Students and Alumni which will meet periodically to formulate projects and programmes for interactions between College, Society and Industry to keep pace with the latest developments in relevant fields.
