III. Associated Departments:

The department also houses other two sister departments (Microbiology and Industrial Fisheries) facilitated with separate spacious and well equipped Laboratories.

a) Department of Industrial Fish and Fisheries

Fisheries course started in 1994 under the shelter of Zoology department. It is UGC sponsored vocational course. Industrial fish and fisheries department trains its students in ornamental and commercial fish culture practices, utilization of natural water bodies, aquarium construction, pond management and other aspects. With these skills students after the completion of the course could be self employed and also could generate employment. Some students have already achieved it and few are earning while learning. Hitherto, there is good response from the students for opting the course.

b) Department of Microbiology: This department was begun in the year 1997 with the aim of advanced specification. Microbiology department trains the students on varied aspects of pathogenic diseases, industrial aspects and other domestic needs.

IV.  Academic Programmers:

The Department of Zoology organizes seminars and group discussions involving the students, which basically improves the feature of students by developing their leadership qualities and bringing in them the stage courage.

Occasionally the department also arranges the symposium and seminars and invites eminent persons and subject experts to address the gathering.

Regular field trips and study tours are conducted for the students every year. During the tenure different geographical sites, institutions and industries are visited. This enables the students to go beyond the four walls and acquire wide spread knowledge.

V. Research Activities:

The specific feature of the department is the presence of well-established research laboratory. It is housed in the independent building. The research wing has so far produced 12 Ph.D’s and 07 M.Phil’s since 1953. At present six regular Ph.D students are working in the laboratory on different topics. Publications on varied aspects of zoology are being contributed to different National and International journals regularly from this research laboratory. Research scholars and research supervisors are frequently participating in seminars and symposiums.  Presently four potential and specialized research supervisors are actively engaged in research work in the department.

The staff and the research scholars are involved in Environment awareness programme, studying biodiversity and other extensive works like monitoring the quality of water bodies of this region. Research laboratory also extends its constancy for the approaching people regarding water testing and its potability, soil testing, aquaculture practices (Ornamental fish culture, pond management and disease monitoring).

Evidence:

Alnavar mass fish mortality incident investigated and report submitted to State Fisheries department. Awareness was created among the public to further avoid such incidents.

Kali river pollution due to paper mill effluent and its fish potential survey, plankton diversity was under taken. Results obtained are published in reputed science journal.

One of the staff members on the behalf of the department is involved with Non- government organizations (NGO) that are engaged in forest resource and its conservation, maintaining hygienic environment and health at village root level.
